New GM Brings Fresh Perspective To Maple Leafs
Brad Treliving is set to make his mark on the storied Toronto Maple Leafs. And the 18th General Manager in team history will certainly have the talent to work with, including star scorer Auston Matthews.
Last season Matthews recorded his fifth 40-plus-goal campaign, tying William Nylander for the team lead in the category. Matthews now enters the 2023-24 season tied for fifth with Rick Vaive among all-time Maple Leafs goal-scorers (299).
Nylander’s career-best 40 goals also helped produce a career-high 87 points, ranking second on the team. At the same time, Mitch Marner’s 99 points marked the fourth time in seven seasons he led the team in points. Now Marner closes in on George Armstrong for sixth all-time in Maple Leaf assists and eighth in points (held by Bob Pulford).
Heading into his 11th season, defenceman Morgan Rielly looks to pass Tim Horton for eighth all-time in assists (349). Rielly was a clutch contributor along Toronto’s blue line during last spring’s playoffs, helping knock out the experienced Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round.
Captain John Tavares also stepped up in the postseason at crucial moments, while the team saw youngsters Matthew Knies and goaltender Joseph Woll emerge as contributors.
Last season Toronto finished two points shy of the second-best record in the NHL. And the loyal Leafs Nation remains excited for more, as a new GM gets to work.
